    Gutter Cleaning Service Preston

Gutters are the part of a house most people forget until water pours over the edge in a storm. North W Roofing runs a gutter cleaning service Preston homeowners, landlords and businesses can rely on: we clear gutters, outlets and downpipes, check the guttering while we're up there and fix what we find once you've agreed the quote. Because we're roofers rather than just cleaners, one visit can deal with the gutters, the roof edge and anything else the cleaning uncovers.

This page is an overview of our gutter cleaning work. Each service has its own page with more detail.

    How a rainwater system works

Your gutters are one part of a system that carries rain from the roof to the ground.

    PartWhat it doesWhat goes wrong
GuttersCatch the water running off the roofBlocked with leaves and moss, leaking joints, sagging
BracketsHold the gutters at the right fallRust, break or pull out of rotten fascias
OutletsLet water drop from the gutter into the downpipeBlocked with silt and debris
DownpipesCarry the water down the wallBlocked, cracked or come loose from the wall
FasciasThe boards the gutters are fixed toRot when gutters overflow onto them

If any one part fails, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn't: down the wall, behind the fascia or into the roof edge. That's why we check the whole system, not just the gutter itself.

    Downpipes and outlets

A clean gutter is no use if the water can't get out of it. Outlets, where the gutter drops into the downpipe, collect silt and leaves and are often the first place to block. Downpipes can block lower down, crack in frost or come loose from the wall, and some older houses have hoppers, open boxes at the top of a downpipe that fill with debris. When we clean your gutters, we clear the outlets and check that water runs freely down each downpipe, clearing blockages we can reach. If a downpipe is cracked or loose, we'll tell you and quote to fix it.

    Signs your gutters need attention

    • Water spilling over the edge in heavy rain.
    • Plants, grass or moss growing in the gutters.
    • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the roof edge.
    • Drips from joints or corners during and after rain.
    • No water coming out of the bottom of a downpipe in rain.
    • Green staining or damp on the wall below a gutter.
    • Peeling paint or rot on the fascia boards behind the gutter.

    What a visit includes

    1. Safe access to the gutters, front and back.
    2. Clear the gutters of leaves, moss and debris.
    3. Clear the outlets and check the downpipes are running freely.
    4. Inspect the system: joints, sections, brackets, fall, downpipes and the fascias behind.
    5. Explain what we found, with a quote for any repairs.
    6. Clear up the debris we've removed.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

There's no single answer; it depends on what's around your property. Homes near trees fill their gutters fastest, and mossy roofs keep washing moss into them. Historic England advises that clearing rainwater goods regularly keeps them working as they should, and that how often you need maintenance should be reviewed regularly. For most homes, a check once the leaves have fallen, before the winter rain, is a sensible routine.

Why blocked gutters cost more than they seem

Overflowing water soaks the brickwork below, which can lead to damp inside, usually at the top of walls and around windows. It rots the fascia boards the gutters are fixed to, so a cleaning job turns into new fascias and new gutters. And the weight of wet debris pulls gutters away from their brackets. Regular cleaning is far cheaper than any of these. See our damp prevention roofing page.

Gutter cleaning for every kind of property

    Homes

From bungalows to three-storey houses, we clear gutters front and back, including the awkward runs over extensions and conservatories.

    Terraced houses

Gutters on terraces often run across several properties, so a blockage next door can overflow onto your wall. We'll tell you where the problem is coming from.

    Rental properties

Blocked gutters are a common cause of damp complaints from tenants. Regular clearing is a simple part of keeping a rental property in good order. See our landlord property maintenance page.

    Commercial buildings

Larger roofs send much more water into the gutters, and blocked outlets on a commercial building can flood into the building. See our commercial roofing page.

    Moss on the roof

If your roof is covered in moss, the rain will keep washing it into the gutters, and they'll block again soon after cleaning. Dealing with the moss as well as the gutters gives a longer-lasting result. See our moss removal and roof cleaning page.

A simple year for your gutters

Most homes only need a little attention to keep their gutters working:

    • Autumn, once the leaves have fallen: the main clean of the year, before the winter rain.
    • Winter: after storms or high winds, look at the gutters from the ground for anything that has been pulled loose.
    • Spring: check for seeds, blossom and nests, especially near trees.
    • Summer: a good time for any repairs or replacement found during the autumn clean, while the weather is settled.

Homes surrounded by trees may need clearing more than once a year.

    Gutters on older Preston homes

Many of Preston's older terraces and villas still have long runs of gutter with joints and brackets that have been working loose for decades. On these homes, a gutter that keeps overflowing is often a sign of a lost fall or a failed bracket rather than just a blockage. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, keep the style of the gutters like for like when anything is replaced, and check with Preston City Council before changing it. See our period property roofing page.

What to look for in a gutter cleaning service

Anyone can clear leaves out of a gutter. What makes the difference is what happens next. Look for a service that is fully insured for work at height, checks the whole system rather than just the gutter, tells you plainly what it found, and quotes before doing any extra work. As roofers, we can also deal with the roof edge, fascias and roof itself if the cleaning shows a problem there.

    Working safely

Gutter work means working at height. The Health and Safety Executive advises treating every roof as fragile until a competent person has confirmed it isn't. Never climb onto a roof, a conservatory or a flat roof to reach a gutter. If you're not comfortable working at height, leave it to someone who does it every day.

    Where we work

We clean gutters across Preston and the surrounding towns, including Fulwood, Penwortham, Leyland, Chorley, Longridge, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall. See all the areas we cover.
