Residential Roofing Preston
Roofing for every kind of home
Homes across Preston and the surrounding towns were built in very different ways, and their roofs need different approaches.
Victorian and older terraces
Many of Preston's terraces and villas date from its growth as a cotton town in the 1800s. They often have natural slate roofs, tall brick chimney stacks and lead valleys and gutters. These roofs reward like-for-like repairs with matching materials. See our period property roofing page.
Post-war and later homes
Semis and detached houses from the 20th century are more often tiled, with concrete or clay tiles. Common problems include worn ridge mortar, slipped tiles and tired felt underneath. See our tile roofing page.
Newer homes
Even newer homes can need roofing work, from storm damage to problems around roof windows and abutments. Extensions and dormers on all ages of home often have flat roofs. See our flat roofing page.
Bungalows
Bungalows have a lot of roof for the size of the house, so the roof has a big effect on the home below. Re-bedded ridges, replaced tiles and well-maintained gutters keep them dry.
Signs your roof needs attention
You don't need to go up a ladder to spot most roof problems. From the ground, a window or the loft, look for:
- Slipped, cracked or missing tiles or slates, often after windy weather.
- A wavy or dipping ridge line, or gaps in the mortar along the ridge.
- Lead around the chimney or roof windows that has lifted or split.
- Damp patches or stains on top-floor ceilings, especially after rain.
- Daylight through the roof when you look up from inside the loft.
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain, or plants growing in them.
- Moss building up thickly on the roof slopes.
One of these on its own doesn't mean the roof is failing, but it's worth getting it looked at before a small fault lets water in.

How we work with homeowners
We look before we quote
We look at the roof and, where we can, the loft, so the quote is based on what's actually wrong rather than guesswork.
We explain in plain English
You'll hear what we found, what we'd recommend and why. If a repair will do, we'll say so. If the roof is past repairing, we'll explain why a new roof is better value.
We protect your home
Roofing work is noisy and messy by nature. We protect your property and garden while we work, and clear up and take waste away when we've finished.
We quote before any extra work
If we find something else once the work starts, we'll stop, explain it and quote before going further.
Repair or replace?
The most common question we're asked is whether a roof needs repairing or replacing. A repair is usually right when the roof is basically sound and the problem is in one area. Replacement makes sense when tiles or slates are failing across the roof, the battens are rotten or the felt underneath has broken down, or repairs keep failing in different places. We'll give you an honest view either way.
Looking after your roof through the year
A little attention each year keeps a roof in good order for much longer. Before winter, it's worth having loose tiles, ridges and flashing checked and gutters cleared once the leaves have fallen. After storms or high winds, look at the roof from the ground for anything that has moved. Every few years, a proper check of the whole roof, including the chimney and the loft, picks up wear before it becomes a leak. See our roof maintenance page.
Residential roofing for landlords
Roofs, gutters and chimneys are where water usually gets into a rental property. We carry out repairs and planned maintenance for landlords as well as homeowners. See our property maintenance for landlords page.
Older homes and conservation areas
Parts of Preston are conservation areas, such as Fishergate Hill, which also has an Article 4 direction. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, changing roofing materials can need consent. Like-for-like repairs are usually the right approach, and we'll match what's there as closely as we can.
Our warranty
Our premium roofing projects come with a 30-year warranty on materials and workmanship. Ask us for the details when we quote.
